Kelvin was born in Singapore, a city, state and a nation in South East Asia. He reckons he’s a happy go lucky boy and has the best childhood years. Academics was not his priority even though he inspired to become a doctor someday which requires excellent entry scores. The wakeup call came at 16 when he realised his grades were far from realising his dream. Kelvin chose the next closest profession and pursued a Nursing Diploma, against his parents’ advice, influenced by the stigma of being a male nurse in conservative Asian culture. Fortunately Kelvin discovered his passion for healthcare, and really enjoyed the human connection he had during his clinical rotations. This spurred him to be hungry for knowledge, to be in better position to help his patients. He was later awarded the Nursing Diploma with Merit, and worked in a busy tertiary hospital as a Registered Nurse. Just as Kelvin thought he found his calling to be a Nurse for life, he became interested about the Doctor’s profession again when interacting with his medical colleagues. The internet search revealed the existence of Graduate Medical School overseas which gave Kelvin another glimpse of hope in his early 20s. With the family’s blessing, Kelvin upgraded himself to a post graduate Nursing Degree with University of Sydney, and started to prepare for Graduate Medical School Admissions Test (GAMSAT). He was really determined, and sat GAMSAT thrice to successfully gain entry into University of Western Australia. He eventually graduated with Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in 2017 and got ‘kidnapped’ by his current wife to Victoria ever since.
GP has a special place in Kelvin’s heart
Kelvin wouldn’t have a Father to grow up with if it wasn’t for their family doctor, Dr Ranjan Ramasamy back in Singapore. His dad presented to Dr Ramasamy for a heavy chest feeling, which turned out to be an acute heart attack. Dr Ramasamy told his receptionist he would be out for awhile, and personally drove Kelvin’s father to the emergency department. Subsequently, Kelvin went on to meet several amazing GPs during his medical school and junior doctor years which aspired him to pursue General Practice specialty. The Covid-19 pandemic also made him realise the hospital is the last place that any patient would want to be in. Hence, Kelvin always found the GP speciality extremely meaningful and rewarding when his patients are living their dream in the community.
A day in the community, is a Win for Kelvin and his patients.
